Construction
Solid hardwood is made of solid wood with one continuous grain and is usually made of hardwood species like maple, oak or walnut. Since it is solid, it can be sanded and refinished many times over its lifespan.
Engineered hardwood looks almost identical from the top because it has a top layer that is a wood veneer but is made with multiple layers of plywood to create more dimensional stability. Dimensional stability is the degree in which the material maintains its original dimensions when subjected to changes in temperature and humidity.
Appearance
Solid hardwood planks vary in width typically up to 5". There are an abundance of colors and textures for more personalization.
Engineered hardwood looks almost identical to solid hardwood and offers more flexibility in width options. There are many design options that are only available in engineered hardwood such as extra wide planks or dramatic color effects.
Environment
Solid hardwood is more sensitive than other floor options. It is not recommended where humidity or moisture can go through because it can swell and warp. It's best installed in living and dining areas, kitchen and bedrooms. It's not recommended to be installed in bathrooms or laundry rooms where water and humidity are present.
Engineered hardwood can go in the same rooms as well along with basements and over radiant heat. It still isn't waterproof but it has better performance in humid locations compared to solid hardwood. This flooring is less susceptible to warping and swelling. Some engineered hardwood can have a protective wear layer over the veneer to protect it from water spills and water damage.
Lifespan
Solid hardwood has a longer lifespan than most types of flooring. It can last anywhere from 30 to 100 years with proper maintenance. This is why we still see some houses with hardwood floors from the 1850s.
Engineered hardwood can't be refinished as often as solid hardwood but it can last up to 30 years or more with proper maintenance and care.
